U.S. commercial engagement overseas is an effective method for promoting democracy, human rights, and other values that can make a positive difference in the lives of millions. Because U.S. companies are often actively involved at many levels in the countries and communities they serve, the benefits are great -- and tangible. From better schools and health care to improved infrastructure and housing -- business is making a difference.

Philippine Geothermal, Inc. (PGI) a wholly owned subsidiary of Unocal, has employed a staff of community development specialists who, with the support of the government utility, NPC, plan and carry out a range of social services and improvement projects in the Tiwi and Mak-Ban areas of the Philippines. PGI sets aside one percent of the preceding years net income, before taxes, to underwrite community development programs. Funds are used to build roads, schools and community centers and to encourage sustainable enterprise development, upgrade municipal water systems and provide other basic infrastructure.In addition, the company also helps underwrite childcare services, education and skills training, and health care and nutrition programs. In 1997 PGI began a computer literacy program in cooperation with local schools. PGI provides hardware, software and trains a group of teachers who will in turn train teachers throughout the region. PGI also provides numerous scholarships.
