The global economy has extended the reach of U.S. economic interests to virtually every nation on earth. Through extensive involvement abroad, American business is successfully bringing desperately needed economic benefits to the developing world. Indeed, the positive effects of trade by U.S. companies often go far beyond creating jobs and raising living standards. U.S. commercial engagement overseas is an effective method for promoting democracy, human rights, and other values that can make a positive difference in the lives of millions.

Because U.S. companies are often actively involved at many levels in the countries and communities they serve, the benefits are great -- and tangible. From better schools and health care to improved infrastructure and housing -- business is making a difference.

Over the next several weeks, USA*ENGAGE will provide individual company examples of the positive role of commercial engagement abroad.

Occidental Petroleum is active in Ecuador, where it is working to improve the health care needs of the populace near where it is drilling in the Oriente region in the northeast. Pre- and post-natal care is available at a clinic and other health posts. A local pharmacy has been established, and a school breakfast program created with the Ministry of Education feeds 500 children.

The presence of Occidental Oil and Gas on the health-care scene has made a significant difference in the lives of the local population in Ecuador. Besides building a health clinic and three rural health stations, the company has trained experts to provide preventative health care instructions to the local population. As a result of the health care and health education the company provided, the infant mortality rate, which was 42 per 1,000 live births in 1993, has fallen to 0.

Occidental Oil and Gas helped build 11 primary schools, three day care centers, and a boarding school in Ecuador.
