Indeed, the positive effects of trade by U.S. companies often go far beyond creating jobs and raising living standards. U.S. commercial engagement overseas is an effective method for promoting democracy, human rights, and other values that can make a positive difference in the lives of millions. Because U.S. companies are often actively involved at many levels in the countries and communities they serve, the benefits are great -- and tangible. Pagerungan Island, Indonesia, has benefited from ARCO's nearby presence. ARCO has constructed a junior high school and three elementary schools on the island, as well as housing for teachers and a paramedic. ARCO built the islandŐs first ice plant and cold storage facility, providing storage and enabling fishermen to catch different species of fish. The company also reconstructed a mosque and built a village hall, youth centers and health clinics. In addition, ARCO has increased the supply of fresh water and electricity on the island.
