U.S. commercial engagement overseas is an effective method for promoting democracy, human rights, and other values that can make a positive difference in the lives of millions. Because U.S. companies are often actively involved at many levels in the countries and communities they serve, the benefits are great -- and tangible. From better schools and health care to improved infrastructure and housing -- business is making a difference.

American Express has served as the founding sponsor since 1996 of an innovative interantional program established by the World Monuments Fund to Identify cultural heritage sites that are at risk and to seek funds for their rescue. American Express helped launch the World Monument Watch's annual list of the 100 Most Endangered Sites program and has committed financial resources to the program over the course of its first five years.The 1998-9 List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites calls attention to 20 sites in Western Europe, 25 sites in the former Soviet bloc, 19 in Asian, 6 in North American, 9 in South America, 11 in Central America and the Caribbean.
